Generative Engine Optimization

The zero-click answer is the normal case now

For years, marketers treated a search as a promise of a visit. Someone looks, someone clicks, someone lands on your page. That promise is weaker every quarter. A large share of questions now end with a satisfactory answer on the results screen or inside an assistant, and the visit never happens.

It is tempting to read that as pure loss, but it is more complicated. The click mattered because it was your chance to make an impression. If a model is making that impression for you, in the answer, then the answer is the new front door. Being named there, accurately, can do the job the click used to do, even when no traffic shows up in your analytics.

That reframing is uncomfortable because it breaks a measurement habit. You can no longer prove value by counting sessions alone. You have to look at whether the engines mention you, whether prospects arrive already warm, and whether your pipeline fills from conversations that started somewhere you cannot fully see.

The brands that struggle with this are the ones still optimising only for the visit. The ones that adapt accept a simple fact. Attention has moved upstream into the answer, and you either influence what the answer says or you let a machine improvise it on your behalf.
