Generative Engine Optimization

What generative engine optimization actually means

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting a brand named, described correctly, and recommended inside the answers that AI systems write. When someone asks ChatGPT which tool to pick, or asks Perplexity who the serious players are, a short reply comes back with a handful of names. GEO is about being one of them.

That is a narrower target than it sounds. Traditional search rewards a page that ranks. A model rereads the open web, forms a view, and then writes a few sentences. You are not competing for position four on a results page. You are competing to be the source the model reaches for when it composes the reply, and to be summarised in a way you would actually sign off on.

The mechanics follow from that. Instead of chasing keywords, you make your facts consistent and easy to extract. Instead of counting backlinks alone, you watch whether engines mention you at all, how often they prefer you to a rival, and whether what they say is true. The output is not a ranking report. It is a record of how machines talk about you when a buyer is listening.

None of this replaces good marketing. A brand that nobody trusts and nobody writes about will not suddenly become the model's favourite. GEO works when there is something real to find, and it makes sure the machines find the right version of it.
