Generative Engine Optimization
Structured data, read by machines that are guessing
Structured data is a way of labelling the facts on a page so a machine does not have to infer them. You mark up that this string is your company name, this is a product, this is its price, this is the author and when they wrote. Search engines have used it for years to build rich results. Answer engines use the same signals to reduce how much they have to guess.
Guessing is the problem it solves. Left to read raw text, a model can misattribute a quote, confuse two products, or assume a stale price is current. Clear markup removes the ambiguity. It does not force the engine to feature you, and anyone selling schema as a ranking trick is overpromising. What it does is make the easy facts unmissable, so the model spends its confidence on describing you rather than decoding you.
Start with the types that match what you are: an organisation, the products or services you sell, articles with real authors and dates, and the questions you answer. Keep the markup honest and in step with what a visitor sees on the page, because engines discount data that contradicts the visible content.
Done well, structured data is invisible to your customers and quietly useful to every machine that reads you. That is exactly what you want from plumbing.
