Generative Engine Optimization
Share of answer, the metric that replaces rank
Rank tells you where a page sits on a results screen. Share of answer tells you how often an engine names you when it replies to the questions your buyers ask. For AI search, the second number is the one that moves revenue.
Measuring it is less exotic than it sounds. You start with a set of real questions, the kind a prospect types into an assistant when they are close to choosing. You ask those questions across the major engines on a regular schedule. Then you count: how often does your brand appear, in what position within the reply, and alongside which competitors.
Run that for a month and a picture forms. Maybe you own the broad category questions but vanish the moment someone asks for a recommendation. Maybe a rival you rarely think about shows up in half the replies. Maybe an engine keeps citing a three-year-old review that no longer reflects your product. Each of those is a specific problem with a specific fix.
The number will wobble. Models change, and the same question can return slightly different wording twice in a row. That is fine. You are watching the trend across many questions and several weeks, not chasing a single reply. Over time, share of answer does what rank used to do: it tells you whether the work is paying off.
