Generative Engine Optimization
Markup that machines can parse without guessing
Under the visible design, a web page is a structure, and how clean that structure is decides how easily a machine can read it. Headings that describe the sections beneath them, paragraphs that are actually paragraphs, lists used for things that are genuinely lists, tables for tabular data. When the markup matches the meaning, a crawler can map your page without guessing. When it does not, the machine has to infer, and inference is where things go wrong.
This matters for answer engines because extraction is their whole job. They are not admiring your layout. They are trying to pull out the claim, the figure, the answer to the question, and lift it cleanly into a reply. A page with a sensible heading structure hands them an outline. A page built from undifferentiated blocks of styled text hands them a puzzle.
The good news is that this is mostly a matter of discipline, not rebuilding. Use a single clear main heading, nest subheadings honestly beneath it, and let the structure of the markup follow the structure of the ideas. Mark up the genuinely structured things as what they are. Resist the urge to fake hierarchy with font sizes alone, because the machine reads the tags, not the styling.
It is the sort of work that never shows up in a screenshot and quietly improves everything downstream. A page a machine can parse cleanly is a page a machine can quote confidently.
