Why assistants keep quoting Reddit
Ask an assistant for a real recommendation and watch how often the reasoning traces back to a forum thread. Reddit and communities like it show up constantly in AI answers, and the reason is not a secret deal so much as a genuine signal. These threads are full of people describing what actually happened when they used something, in plain language, with the warts left in.
Models have learned that this kind of lived experience is useful. A polished brand page says the product is excellent. A forum thread says it is excellent for small teams but painful to migrate to, and here is why. The second is more informative, so the model weighs it, and sometimes it shapes the recommendation more than your own site does.
For a brand, this is both a risk and an opening. You cannot and should not astroturf these communities; it is against their rules, easy to spot, and it poisons the well you are trying to drink from. What you can do is earn the conversation. Be genuinely good, show up honestly where your customers already gather, answer questions as yourself, and fix the complaints that keep surfacing.
The uncomfortable truth is that your reputation in these spaces is partly out of your hands, which is exactly why the model trusts it. The only durable way to influence it is to deserve a better conversation.
