How GEO differs from the SEO you already know
Most of what made a page good for Google still helps with AI answers. Clear writing, fast pages, a sane site structure, real authority behind the claims. If you have done that work, you are not starting from zero.
The difference is what counts as a win. Search sends a ranked list and a click. The reader chooses. An answer engine collapses that into one reply and cites a few sources, and the reader often never leaves the page. So the question shifts from "where do we rank" to "are we in the answer, and what does it say about us."
That changes a few priorities. Keywords matter less than entities, which is the model's sense of who you are and what you do. Position matters less than being quotable, because an engine lifts sentences, not pages. And a single strong page matters less than a consistent story told across your site and the places that write about you, because a model cross-checks before it commits a claim to the reply.
The practical upshot is that SEO and GEO share a foundation and diverge at the top. You can run them together. You just measure them differently, and you stop treating a top ranking as the finish line when the finish line has moved into the answer itself.
