Generative Engine Optimization
Do backlinks still matter for AI search?
A reasonable question, given how much has changed: if models care about mentions and trust, do links still count? They do, though their role has quietly moved. A link's oldest job was to pass authority, a vote that helped a page rank. That still happens. But for AI answers, a link's more important job now is to help a page get found and read in the first place.
Here is the chain. An answer engine, for anything current, runs a search and reads the strongest results. Pages that are well linked tend to be crawled more, indexed better, and ranked higher, which puts them in the set the model actually reads. So links do not directly tell a model to recommend you. They make sure you are in the room when the model is choosing who to quote.
There is a second, softer effect. A link often comes wrapped in a sentence about you, and that sentence is a mention, which models weigh on its own terms. So the same outreach can serve two purposes at once: the link that aids discovery, and the surrounding words that shape what the machine believes.
The mistake is to treat link count as the whole game, as some still do. Acquire links as part of being findable and credible, not as a number to inflate. A page that is well linked but says nothing quotable still loses to a page that is findable and states its point plainly.
