Generative Engine Optimization

Let the AI crawlers actually read you

Before any clever strategy, check something basic: are you letting the AI systems read your site at all? A surprising number of brands quietly block the crawlers these engines use, sometimes through a cautious robots file, sometimes through aggressive bot protection that treats every automated visitor as a threat. The result is self-defeating. You cannot be cited by a system you have locked out.

The crawlers have names, and they are worth knowing, because your robots file and your security rules decide whether they get in. If your policy was written before AI search mattered, it may be blocking GPTBot, the Perplexity crawler, Google's AI-specific agent and others by default, with nobody having made a deliberate choice to do so.

There is a real debate to be had about whether you want your content used to train models, and that is a separate decision from whether you want to appear in answers. The two are often controlled by different rules. A brand can reasonably allow the crawlers that power live answers while thinking harder about the ones that scrape for training. The point is to choose on purpose, not to block everything by reflex.

For a company that wants to be recommended, the default should lean open. Make sure the agents that feed the answers can reach your pages, render what matters, and read it cleanly. Being invisible to the crawler guarantees being absent from the reply.
