Generative Engine Optimization
Being found inside ChatGPT
ChatGPT answers a great deal from memory, but for anything current it reaches out to the web, reads a set of pages, and composes a reply from them. That retrieval step is where your visibility is won or lost, and it behaves a lot like a search engine with a strong preference for clear sources.
So the fundamentals carry weight. If your pages are crawlable, rank for the questions people actually ask, and state their claims plainly, you are a candidate for what it reads. If you are blocked, buried, or vague, it reads someone else. There is no secret handshake, and anyone promising a backdoor into the model is selling a story.
A detail worth checking is whether you are even letting it in. Some sites block the crawlers these systems use, sometimes by accident, sometimes on the advice of a policy written before AI search mattered. For a brand that wants to be recommended, that block is a self-inflicted wound. You are asking to be left out of the conversation.
The honest version of ChatGPT visibility is unglamorous. Be reachable, be relevant to the real question, be clear enough to quote, and be corroborated elsewhere. The model rewards the same qualities a careful human researcher would, which is a reassuring thing to design for.
