When agents start doing the buying

So far, most AI answers advise. They tell a person what to consider and let the person act. The next step, already visible in early forms, is the assistant that acts: it compares options, picks one, and completes the purchase or the booking on someone's behalf. When that becomes common, being the recommended option stops being a nudge and becomes the whole transaction.

It is worth thinking through the implication calmly. If an agent is choosing a vendor to fulfil a request, the criteria it uses are the criteria that win the sale, full stop. There is no browsing, no second impression, no chance for your homepage to charm a hesitant buyer. The agent reads what it can, applies its logic, and commits. Whatever shaped its view of you did the selling.

This raises the value of everything GEO already cares about: being clearly described, trusted by the sources the agent consults, and unambiguous about what you offer and to whom. An agent cannot be won over by vibe. It needs machine-legible reasons to pick you, consistent across the places it checks.

It is early, and the shape of agentic commerce is still forming, so there is no need to overreact. But the direction is clear enough to prepare for. The brands that are easy for a careful machine to understand and trust today are the ones that will be easy for a buying agent to choose tomorrow.
