Generative Engine Optimization

AEO, GEO, AI SEO: untangling the words

The field has a vocabulary problem. Generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization, AI SEO, LLM optimization, and a few more besides, all circling roughly the same work. The proliferation of terms can make it seem like several distinct disciplines exist. Mostly it is one idea wearing different hats, and it helps to say so plainly.

The shared idea is this: getting a brand represented well inside AI-generated answers, whether those come from a chatbot, a search engine's summary, or an assistant that acts. Answer engine optimization tends to emphasise the summary-and-citation surface. Generative engine optimization tends to emphasise the generative systems more broadly. In practice the methods overlap almost entirely, and arguing about the boundary is a poor use of anyone's time.

What matters is not which label you adopt but whether the work underneath is real. Plenty of the terminology is marketing, coined to sound proprietary. The substance is consistent across all of it: be findable, be trusted, be quotable, be accurately described, and measure whether machines actually recommend you.

So pick whichever term your audience understands and move on. We use generative engine optimization because it captures the generative systems that increasingly sit between a question and an answer. If someone insists their acronym is a different and superior science, be a little skeptical. The ideas are young, but they are not that many.
